Working With Families

' thank you for the concern and care to me and our daughter at our last meeting. The strategies you gave us have worked well and still are. The whole family have totally adopted them and as result life seems far calmer…...

(comment from family after 1 session in 2006)

Families face increasing pressure. More and more families move away from their support systems (family and friends) on a regular basis due to work commitments. Pressure is placed on which is the best child care, expectations of schools, helping children achieve at school, higher standards of living with less time for family life, divorce rates increasing and children constantly being assessed and therefore feeling pressurised to succeed or feeling as though they are failing.

Children’s behaviour can make parents feel extremely vulnerable and open to criticism by friends, families and the community. With many people offering differing and conflicting advice and sometimes parents managing behaviour in very different ways, confusion and frustration at lack of change can increase stress in parents relationship and family life.

At future minds we are able to offer appointments for parents, children and the family with either 1 or 2 therapists in order to provide an effective way of helping families make positive changes. Parents can quite quickly make changes which has an immediate impact on their child's behaviour either through individual sessions or by joining a group.

Sometimes children may have specific needs such as autism, ADHD, attachment difficulties that may require a special way of understanding and management and in some cases referral to a more specialist service.

We offer a range of parenting programmes to fit with the life style and goals of the family such as Triple P parenting programme, behaviour management strategies either in the home or clinic and parent child game)

Mediation

We are able to offer a mediation service to families who are experiencing difficulties agreeing arrangements for children following separation or divorce.

The therapist will remain neutral at all times but will help explore ways of meeting the needs for everyone. The family will choose the final decisions made and will remain in control at all times. Depending on the age of the child and with the agreement of the parent the therapist will try to ensure that the wishes of the child is integral in any decision making.

Any decisions already made by the court cannot be overturned without returning to the court for a review.
